  • Description: Allergic contact dermatitis is a form of contact dermatitis that is the manifestation of an allergic response caused by contact with a substance. Also called allergic contact eczema, this is a red, itchy, weepy reaction where the skin has come into contact with a substance that the immune system recognizes as foreign, such as poison ivy or certain preservatives in creams and lotions. The main treatment to cure allergic contact dermatitis consists of avoiding the allergen. In mild to moderate cases, patients may use skin creams containing corticosteroids to reduce the inflammation. These creams should be used carefully and according to the instructions they come with because when overused over longer periods of time they can cause serious skin conditions
